How to Pay for Preserving the Past: Fundraising Case Studies from American History Museums

Learn fundraising best practices through two compelling case studies from American history institutions at different stages of development. The American Antiquarian Society (AAS), an independent research library in Worcester, MA, has collected early American printed materials since its founding in 1812. In contrast, the Museum of the American Revolution (MoAR) in Philadelphia—opened less than a decade ago—shares the story of the nation’s founding through immersive galleries, engaging programming, and one of the most significant collections of Revolutionary-era objects. Despite their differences in age and scope, both organizations face the shared challenge of securing sustainable funding to ensure long-term impact.

Lynn Swain, Vice President for Advancement at AAS, will discuss how the evolution of philanthropy over 213 years has shaped the Society’s approach to fundraising, informing a campaign planning study conducted from fall 2025 through spring 2026. AAS holds over 4.5 million pre-1900 items from all 50 states. Expanding awareness beyond perceptions of a local, academic institution toward a national audience is essential to building a broader base of support.

Danielle Smereczynski, Chief Philanthropy Officer at MoAR, will share insights from building a comprehensive development program following the Museum’s successful $150 million capital campaign that funded its opening in 2017. In 2023, MoAR launched a new campaign planning study to strengthen strategic initiatives, grow its endowment, and expand its national network of supporters. Efforts to develop a robust major gifts program, national membership strategy, and leadership council are key to achieving financial sustainability in its second decade.

Moderator Kelly Grattan of Schultz & Williams, a national fundraising consulting firm based in Philadelphia, will guide discussion on how AAS and MoAR exemplify universal fundraising principles applicable well beyond the historical sector.
