The Heritage Foundation, a 50-year-old Washington, D.C.-based think tank, is deploying a tech stack that enables its direct marketing team to engage in one-to-one communication with its 500,000 members and growing in near real-time.
Traditional direct marketing relies on one-to-many outreach using generalities, personas, and audience segmentation, blasting audiences with no regard for the donor’s uniqueness. This new approach allows personalized conversations on donors' top issues, delivered in their preferred tone, style, and engagement format—at massive scale.
Heritage began this tech stack overhaul 18 months ago and is now seeing initial results. By Bridge 2026, we will have advanced much further toward realizing this vision. We’ve pitched this concept to other nonprofits and they are beginning their overhaul, too.
This is powered by a robust database infrastructure, AI-driven modeling, and language models that generate tailored communications.
Our Data Transformation Initiative is a multi-phase modernization effort incorporating tested AI agents.
The project demanded fresh approaches to: • Architecture and infrastructure (e.g., medallion architecture, AI-ready database, data visualization tools, golden record pipeline, bidirectional data flow) • Engineering rigor (e.g., servers, parallel data pipelines, version control) • AI identification, training, and deployment (e.g., training tools, proof-of-concept establishment, validation) • Governance and documentation (e.g., data architecture, functional and technical specs) • Training, enablement, and adoption (e.g., user manuals, onboarding, full rollout) This is a timely innovative approach to AI that is possible for every nonprofit, regardless of their size. It requires a fresh approach to technology and willingness to be bold.
