Senior Vice President, Communications and Marketing Share Our Strength
Burnout has always been a challenge at many nonprofits, where resources are always tight and expectations are high. This is especially true in moments of great uncertainty, like the times we are living in now.
The World Health Organization lists burnout in its International Classification of Diseases as “a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It lists three criteria: (1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; (2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and (3) reduced professional efficacy.
Burnout is a personal and organizational challenge. It's far more likely to affect people in an unforgiving or chaotic organizational culture, and can be a particular risk for high-performing team members who are given increasing responsibilities because of their reliability, may struggle to set boundaries around their capacity, and often don't recognize the warning signs until burnout is already underway.
This highly interactive session is designed to help senior leaders understand burnout, recognize their own and their team's warning signs, and familiarize themselves with possible responses and solutions. Woven throughout the session are three personal exercises that have been shown to alleviate stress and help restore nervous system balance.
The session balances education, experiential exercises, and group discussions to foster resilience and stress management.
